Six years ago, when my wife abruptly told me one morning: “We are adopting a dog”, I said: “What? Are you crazy?”
Though we’ve always been dog lovers, and at one point even dog breeders, I had serious doubts about rescuing a dog.
I was concerned about the animal’s health, origin and any future issues of aggressiveness, but just a week later, I realized that adopting Rex was one the best decisions we’ve made as a family, and I never looked back.
If you have ever considered adopting a dog, here are some things you need to consider before showing up at home with your new friend:
1) Make sure all family members agree with your decision. If caring for your dog will be a family effort, everyone must understand and agree to their particular roles and responsibilities.
2) Shop for the basics: A leash, collar, a bed, food, and water dishes are a must. Consider getting a microchip for your new friend. A microchip can be a lifesaver if your dog gets lost.
3) Help your new friend adapt to his or her new environment. You may notice some symptoms of anxiety, including a lack of appetite and suppressed bowel habits. Be patient; all that will go away as the days pass.
4) Establish a schedule of feeding and walking and be consistent: Try to walk him and feed him at the same times each day, and use the same words for training. A consistent routine will make all the difference during the housebreaking period.
5) Make an appointment with a vet for an initial checkup and talk to a trainer about the best possible strategy to train your new mascot.
6) Commit to loving your new friend and never give up on him.
